Prof. Kurt is the recipient of a pilot postdoctoral grant to investigate the reasons of why the pediatric brain is more vulnerable to concussions in sports. The multidisciplinary effort will involve magnetic resonance elastography experiments in collaboration with a team of radiologists at Stanford, led by Prof. Max Wintermark and Prof. Kim Butts-Pauly.
Prof. Mehmet Kurt is awarded the prestigious Early Career Award by Thrasher Research Foundation. The purpose of this early career program is to encourage the development of medical research in child health by awarding grants to new researchers, helping them gain a foothold in this important area. The award was open to all scientists and clinicians worldwide and had a success rate <10%. The award will help Prof. Kurt and his team to develop an airbag-based smart helmet to reduce the risk of concussions for bicycling in the pediatric population.
